Although those are Arcane spells, and that magic does have it in lore that it requires a gift. The druidic magics of the Cenarion Circle may be easier to learn, since they're at a "frequency" more people are able to access. Or maybe the Circle can attune people to those powers easily. Or maybe the throwaway line refers to all the NON-druids running around guarding people, acting as porters and merchants, things like that.

And I think that the point that Blizzard has already made involves "Must have the talent to work with these energies". Anyone can use a computer with the right training. But Magic is like a computer tuned with musical notes. Almost everyone can sing in the shower, but if you don't have perfect pitch and the ability to sing certain notes you're not making it work. I say that because of the amount of "semi-magical" effects generated by other classes. Thunderclap, anyone?  less

How much energy are you pushing into the spell? How tightly focused is it? How efficiently does it shake whatever you're casting it on to set it on fire? How good are you at pushing past whatever defenses the target has against magic setting it on fire? All these things make a difference. And why does one set of molecules make caffeine and another chocolate? No universe goes into that much detail mostly because people usually draw those parallels and leave it at that. The dusty old tomes and snobbery are because unlike today, most mages don't teach in a "university" type setting. They take individual apprentices and don't give a dig rat's backside if their peers don't get what they're talking about. In fact, they like it that way. Less chance of their rivals breaking in, stealing their books, and learning their closely guarded secrets. The closest thing to a governing body of mages is the Kirin Tor, and they're less concerned with standardization a...    less

And you don't have to be within touching distance of whatever you're trying to put a hole into. Extensive training may not be required for magic, but everything I've read about it says that some inborn talent is required. Maybe not much, but no talent = no magic. There's a reason that when talking about the laws of magic they say that it's the difference between a slave and a king.

Magic is a vast and tricky force that has a lot of room for variation. Ask three mages what magic is and if you only get five answers you're probably lucky. Thsay sees magic as the ability to work with patterns of energy made manifest. It's a lot like a spectrum of colors, except that the "colors" don't quite match up. Light is on the high end, Shadow is on the low, and everything else is in between. All things are actually energy bound into patterns, and magic is simply the ability to channel energy, shape it's patterns with your willpower, and get a result. Can someone with no talent draw a perfect rune? Yes. Will it do anything without power being channeled through it? Probably not. That's the point of magic, really. The exercise of the will to focus power into a desired result. If anyone could do it, EVERYONE would do it. The different schools of the...    less

When poking at the new Chat feature, I click on the "chat" link and it opens up with everything except who's in the chatroom off the side of the page. This is repeatable in both Safari 5.1.2 and Firefox 8.0! This one's really odd... Maybe it has to do with me trying to poke at it with my Nook Tablet before I got home and saw it on the desktop? I can't imagine how, but I also don't know what code BERT runs on. I'd just like to be able to see what people are saying!
