I awoke in the darkness, panicked, believing the dreams had me in their clutches again. But it was only drawn curtains and snuffed candles to blame. I was safe... relatively, at least. On waking, it would always be there. A pervasive, sickly sweet smell of decay. It tickled at my nostrils, wafting throughout the house, both upstairs and down, through the childrens’ rooms, through the kitchen, through the drawing room, and out up the ash-filled chimney. But the house remained as clean and empty as a seaside hostel, dust-swept and well-tended.
