Suggestion: Ingame Toon Name Tab

This is a very small suggestion for future consideration.

It's not uncommon for players to sign up on the ERN under names that are very different from their toon name ingame. This has sometimes led to confusion on my part, such as during the Dragonblight Campaign when individuals were signing up for the LFR under names that I couldn't find ingame or on WoWArmory.

It took a bit of sleuthing to locate these individuals, but if there was a required "Ingame Toon Name" tab to fill out on a character profile, this could be made easier.

I've considered how signing up with a differnet character name could be considered against the ERN ToS, but ingame addons make the practice more prominent. MyRolePlay currently shows full names in chat windows: instead of [Arialynn], it's [Arialynn Maewood]. Some have expanded upon this feature by changing their chat display name entirely, such as from [Bob] to [Robert Smith].

Another example are players who use special characters in their ingame name, but not in their names on the ERN, which produces the same result.

This naming practice not meant to be deceptive, and it's been practiced far before MRP added it as a feature, and the ERN was born. Is it possible to add an Ingame Toon Name option on character profiles to eliminate future confusion?

I'll see your awesome idea and raise you this: Armory links to characters. Something clickable on our profiles.

This a great idea. There are those that I Rp with quite closely and /or on a regular basis- even some in my guild whose Rp name is not the same name in game. It is easier and far more cheaper to use a MRP name change then to buy one from Blizzard. my orc Rogue Aalon- real name is Seriena in game. I have paid to change the names of my others. But Seriena was my very first toon and my friends and family and even her mate (whom is presumed dead-has desired me to keep the name. Seriena is a common name and Aalon is her clan name. Other then her name.. every name I have as a character here on site- is the legit name. Having a quick tab to find folks -by their unoffical names- is a GREAT idea.

(( oops forgot I wasnt under Syvbia )) hehe

Good raise, sir. One extra challenge for moderators is to ensure that the characters on the ERN actually exist ingame. A WoWArmory link on character profiles can be a way to help, not to mention help clear up the naming issue.

Great point. Instead of paying x-amount of money to change a character's name, players opt to use addons or simply word-of-mouth if they remake a character, but use the same toon. I can't blame anyone in this regard, because how they spend both their money and their gametime is entirely their choice.

On an older server where players have been using the same toons for upteen years, this practice is likely more common.

I agree Arialynn. I probably should have Star's name up on here as Star, but she's mostly called Ciera now. Or...at least half the time. Maybe I'll toss it in.

Done and done. Added mandatory in-game name field and a field for Battle.net profiles. This has been on my list of things to do for a while. Thanks for the bump.

Thanks for the quick response and adding the feature, Jaero.

A quick screenshot tutorial of what the feature is, where to find it, and how to locate your character's Battle.net URL:

    1. Edit My Profile

Start by editing your character's profile. The easiest way to locate the link is to head to your profile page, and click on the link directly below your character's profile image.

    2. Edit Player Information

In the Personal Info tab, scroll down to Player Information. This is a new section located between Character Information and Personal Information.

    3. Retrieve Battle.net URL

There are multiple ways to do this, here is one.

Head to http://worldofwarcraft.com or http://us.battle.net/wow/en/. Both URLs route to the same page.

In the Search characters, items, forums and more... search tab on the top right, type in your character's name. Click the Magnifying Glass icon or simply hit Enter.

Your character may not be the only character with that name. To make your search easier, you can also type in your guild name, then locate your character on its WoWArmory roster. Whatever makes your search easiest.

Once you arrive at your character page on WoWArmory, you can copy/paste the URL into your ERN Edit Profile page.

A few notes about the URL...

    us.battle.net/wow/en/character/earthen-ring/Name/
    us.battle.net/wow/en/character/earthen-ring/Name/simple

    us.battle.net/wow/en/character/earthen-ring/Name/advanced

The above URLs work. The first URL must include a backslash ( / ), else it will route to a 404 File Not Found page. The /simple or /advanced designations will display your character WoWArmory profile in a Simple or Advanced view. The choice is up to you.

    4. Copy to Profile & Save

On your Edit My Profile page, type in your Ingame Character Name. This is the name of your toon ingame without the use of RP addons such as MyRolePlay, FlagRSP, TotalRP, etc. What is the name of the actual toon itself?

    Examples

    Character Name: Arialynn Maewood

    Ingame Name: Arialynn

    Character Name: Robert Smith

    Ingame Name: Böb

Remember to copy/paste special characters into this tab, if your ingame toon name has special ALT characters. The intent of this feature is to help fellow roleplayers find you ingame by friending you, sending in-character letters or inviting your toon to events.

Copy/paste the WoWArmory URL into the Battle.net Profile Link tab.

When complete, it will appear like this on your saved Profile page:
