What is a "Mary Sue" & Is your character a "M

A recyled topic from the old Ning but still a interesting topic to bring up.

A Mary Sue is a character whose positive aspects overwhelm their other traits until they become one-dimensional. Such as being the helpess girl who always is kidnapped or perhaps The Most Interesting Man in the World who happened to knew Uther the Lightbringer and who served as Supreme Commander of the Alliance.

Mary Sues have always existed in our community and at times, it could be both a strong strength for increasing roleplay or it could be a very strong weakness. The point of this topic is mainly to see what your character is on the Mary Sue radar.

Now it is also a great topic to discussed such as "Who is a Mary Sue?" In most books and novels it is easy to identify the "Mary Sue" character in the story. But does this fit into our community and into Roleplayers characters? Well I'll leave that for you to decide.

    Also a very...very aged survey.

Having not done this survey in years.

I am amazed to receive the score of...21 making me labeled as..

"21 - 30 - The Mary-Sue - Whoops. Your character seems to need a little work. Your character is likely a bit unbelievable and maybe even annoying, but he or she is certainly not beyond repair. Don't give up!"

Now I have to admit roleplaying on Kelsus for several years has led to alot of changes and some drastic shifts in storyline. But I do admit to some of my character's flaws especially his storyline but I do feel that it certainly fits into my storyline of Kelsus. And perhaps makign sense of his journey. But then again, I hit a 21. Which is the lowest...so maybe I got a bit lucky?

I got an 8. Which is good! I wasn't trying to make her anything other than what I go by. She's just a very average blood elf with a very bad addiction to arcane (and other things). I think I should've scored a bit higher so maybe I missed a question somewhere. Hmmm

I nailed a 15, but as it was outdated, no accurate scoring for DKs

I scored a four, but it is fairly outdated. I also don't think some of those questions accurately describe a Mary Sue and more a "likely to be a Mary Sue" character. Like the one about being a dragon or Naruu or whatever. A Mary Sue is, as the first post says, an uninteresting, one-dimensional character with few negative traits. I've met people who RP dragons who were fairly realistic and multi-faceted about it.

I got a 9, which is rather surprising, I've sometimes wonder if Lil came out too good.

I had a difficult time answering some of the questions since they didn't fit... and some that I answered don't seem Mary Sue like. Hmm, I don't know, but I don't feel as though Elly is a Mary Sue. I scored a 29 so maybe I'm deluded...

There's nothing wrong with cliches. Also, what is "Mary Sue'ish" about being a bounty hunter or a mercenary? Pretty sure that being a mercenary is what the entire game is about.

Not exactly the best survey-thing, especially considering it is talking about a very vague topic.

I wound up with a numerical value of 4 which apparently means:

"1 - 10 - The Non-Sue - You've dodged all the annoying cliches and made it to the coveted rank of Non-Sue. Congratulations! Your character is likely original and well-balanced."

I will hear none of these wild accusations against me ):

I think this should be taken for what it is: A good tool to use to make you really think about your character. Yes, it's true that not ALL cliches are bad. And I agree with Aelannor that being a mercenary in Azeroth is not really a Sue quality.

I think this survey is a little harsh and if we all played plain Janes then it would be very dull. I appreciate outlandish characters, and Sera is one herself.

That being said, being a drop dead beauty cursed by her looks who fights with her evil twin and whose daddy was Arthas/Illidan and who now is having a love affair with Deathwing is just silly (no see, it happens! XD).

I say as long as you develop your character and play them true to what you've envisioned and grow them with the events in their lives...you're all good.

After having a talk with Nestaron, he told me he felt my character is not a Mary Sue. So at least I know of one person besides myself that doesn't think that is true of Elly. She is complicated and flawed in good ways. His words, which makes me feel a bit better. That stupid thing made me kinda paranoid!! :(

    I got a 4.

For elves, please note that answering any question "is an elf" gives you at least one point on the Sue scale just by virtue of the race you picked.

As is the way it should be, Kormok. As is the way it should be.

I only click the "is an efl" if I clicked on the question it came above since it was indented the way it was.

And that brings me back to the reason why I said I didn't think I did well answering questions. If it makes me a Sue because I play an elf... well so be it. And that sort leaves me with the impulse to say "shame on you" for not looking past that. :(

*hugs Lil a million times!* Awww!!

Okay then, brand my forehead with a tattoo saying "Sue" and I won't mind... so long as people still like to RP with me! Teehee *giggles*

Wait, is that picture...an orc in a wheelchair?

I don't think it makes anyone's character any closer to sue town if they play an elf. Elves have especially interesting lore to some people (I enjoy the darker aspects of their addiction, for example). And in my time in WoW RP, I've seen pleeeenty of Mary Sue orcs. They do not, imho, get bonus points for playing something big and green. So many were SO WISE and so STRONG and LOK'TAR! With no flaws at all. So while I understand somewhat, I find that race playing into it silly.

I'm a bit amazed on the results of you guys and just want to make sure that this survey isn't supposed to be pressed into stone.

It's very dated but it still has some great questions that could be put into your character.

I am sure that this survey was made before Burning Crusade and that High Elves/Blood Elves were not a playable race at that time.

Also meet Drek'thar who is...a bit old. Wheelchairs for the win.

No, Blood Elves and Draeni are in there. I think they're just like "if you're RPing an elf, you're on thin ice."

My god, I have got to work on Jiwa a whole alot, but then again, outdated. I got a 59 "41+ - The Iredeemable-Sue - Have you considered a PvE server?"
