What troubles me more is that people don't RP resurrection, even though it is a lore-based mechanic. Heroes can be risen from death by priests, paladins, shamans and druids. Their souls can be forcably put back into their bodies by warlocks and death knights. Why does no one RP this? The Spirit Healers themselves say, "It is not your time, hero." Granted, she can say this for eternity because its a game, but its still an example of lore-driven game mechanics.
Further evidence: In the The Burning Crusade cinematic a blood elf priestess raises a fallen orc warrior.
For crying out loud... I am not trying to mass an army of in-character lemmings! Enough with your fearmongering that I'm going to be killing off characters because I'm bored and need some exciting storytelling. That's silly, and I resent the implication.
This thread is nothing but a gauge of who would be willing to give up the life of their character. Not to me, just in general, for the sake of a compelling story. If the character isn't ready, or the death would seem contrived and wasteful, it will not happen! AGAIN, this is n't a proposal of how characters may die, why they may die, or when. It is ONLY a gauge to see who is open to the idea and willing to commit to it.
I loathe movies and stories meant to scare the audience/reader into an adrenalated state so that they feel entertained or distracted long enough to feel alive - stories with no lasting value save to add to or intensify a lengthening list of fears or insecurities. Though this thread isn't about a horror-based storyline of that nature, that sort of 'entertainment for entertainment's sake' is not my intent, nor something I have any regard for. My hope is to help craft a story worth remembering. What I envision when I say that this is an 'opportunity' is that those characters who participate (whether they are survivors or casualties) grow, transform, or otherwise develop in some way that is compelling to their player and to other players. In addition, this 'opportunity' will bring a wealth of in-game RP interactions, IC events (preparations, battles, funerals, and so on), and prose storytelling.
If that jives with you, great. If not, fine.
Sheesh.
I've no interest in killing Shame off, but if anyone who is dying would be interested in returning as Forsaken or Death Knight via a plot involving a PC necromancer I'd be happy to offer my services.
EDITED TO ADD: Fair warning: I do make such things a big production RP-wise and the characters tend to return as tattered remains of their former selves.
Here is the list as I currently have it so far, based on replies to this thread and other conversations):
Committed: 6 Characters
Contemplating: 8 Characters
Supporting Roles: 4 Characters
I need the list of committed characters to at least double before this idea can be kicked off.
Would help to have some more supporting roles for the storyline as well.
Feel free to reply with corrections if your stance has changed. If you want to make the commitment, join the Ghosts and Gravestones group!
I find myself being very interested in this topic (shocking). My roleplay on Devons has been spatical and given him many positions of power and ability, but also (due to unforunate IRL issues which caused me much trouble) have had to remove myself from ER for long periods of time. If I could have a long conversation about this topic it would be much welcome, as I have a few ideas about it myself that might be of interest to those wishing to participate. Learning about what is set for the upcoming patch has me pumped for the roleplay that can be had instance-wise. I won't go into details at the moment, as this is a simple reply regarding interest and potential commitment. I pray that this goes off without a hitch in any case, as it is a brilliant and well-founded idea. Love to talk to you in the future.
Light bless the good-hearted,
The Devons
Sorry this is late in coming... I have replies due for a few threads, now!
If y'all need someone to perform funerals, be it on Horde side or Alliance side, I am more than happy to lend a hand there; Kalren's conducted the only funerals I've witnessed on Earthen Ring Alliance-side. I can forward the funeral ceremony format I use to anyone who wants it, too!
